Signed-in teammates and guests with an edit link can edit the same Markdown document at the same time. HTML and historical versions stay read-only.

Start live editing

As a signed-in editor:
  1. Open a Markdown document.
  2. Select Edit. The active mode shows Editing.
  3. Type in the editor. Use Read to return to the rendered document or Changes to inspect Markdown changes.
As a guest editor, open a Markdown document and select Edit to open or close the editor. Guests do not see the Changes control. Workspaces has no Save button.

Automatic save points

Workspaces creates a save point two seconds after the last edit, with a ten-second maximum wait during continuous typing. It also saves pending changes when the last live participant leaves. Each save point appears in the document’s version history and read-only Git history.

Presence

The presence bar shows up to five participant avatars, then +N for more. A pencil marks someone who has the editor open. Two tabs from the same browser can appear as two participants. On the current Markdown document, Workspaces can show another participant’s pointer, text selection, and name. It does not show where that person is typing. The pencil in the presence bar only shows that the person has the editor open. Pinned versions have no presence overlays. One document accepts up to 50 live connections. The next connection cannot join until another tab disconnects.

Connection states

The status can show connecting, reconnecting, or offline. If it shows live unavailable — reload to retry, reload the page. If the editor goes offline, keep the tab open while it reconnects. Do not rely on unsynced text surviving a refresh, tab close, or browser failure. Use Back to reading if live editing cannot start. If the editor says Live editing couldn’t sync this document — reload to try again., reload before making more changes.

Convert Windows line endings

Live editing requires LF line endings. A CRLF document shows This document uses Windows (CRLF) line endings. Select Convert to LF. Workspaces checks for a newer document version before saving. If the check passes, it saves the LF body as a new save point. If the document changed first, the message says The document changed before the conversion saved — try again. Reviewed July 20, 2026.
