# Comment and Reply in Workspaces

> Add anchored or unanchored comments, reply, resolve, reopen, and understand guest and agent labels.

Anyone with [view access](/workspaces/sharing/who-can-access-a-workspace) can
read comments. In the browser's current-version view, anyone with edit access
can add comments, reply, edit or delete the starting comment in a thread, and
resolve or reopen threads. The browser has no control for editing or deleting a
reply.

## Add a comment

To add an anchored comment, select text, enter the comment in the popover, then
select **Save**.

For a Markdown document, select **Global comment** to add a comment without
selected text. The current HTML viewer has no global-comment control.

An anchored comment keeps its quoted text. If later edits remove that text, the
thread remains in the panel as **Unanchored**.

## Reply and resolve

Select **Reply** to add a one-level reply. Select **Resolve** when the thread is
finished. A resolved thread stays visible and remains in the comment count, but
it accepts no new replies until an editor selects **Reopen**.

The panel can collapse older replies behind **Show N earlier replies**.

## Comment on a historical version

A pinned `?version=` view shows the current comment threads in the panel but
does not mark their locations in the old document body. Comments are read-only
in this view. Return to the latest version to comment or resolve.

## Guest names

An anonymous guest can select **Add your name** or **Continue as Guest**. The
name stays in that browser and has a limit of 64 Unicode code points. It is only
a display label; Workspaces does not verify it as an identity.

The guest control can show **Guest · set your name** when no name has been set.

## Agent labels

An agent comment shows the agent label and **on behalf of {human}**. Workspaces
does not label an agent comment as **You**.

## Editor permissions and deletion

Comment controls depend on document edit access, not authorship. Any editor can
edit or delete another person's starting comment and can resolve or reopen that
thread. Deleting the starting comment also deletes all replies. There is no
undo.
